Commonly used drugs for diabetes…

Glucophage (metformin, Bristol Meyers Squibb) – biguanide ; also
available in sustained release form; Glucophage XR. Glucophage is a brand name version of a drug called metformin. Metformin is the most popular diabetes drug in the United States. Metformin’s main job is to get your liver to stop producing too much glucose.

In many diabetics, the liver acts like a sugar factory on overtime; it
goes haywire and produces way too much sugar all throughout the day.
What metformin does is to send a signal to the liver to reduce the
production of sugar.

One drawback of metformin is that it can cause terrible stomach cramps
and diarrhea if you take too high a dose too soon. You have to give
your body a chance to get used to the metformin. If you build up the
dose slowly, day by day, these side effects can be dramatically reduced.

If you have poor kidney function you should not take metformin.
our doctor will monitor your kidney function with a simple blood test.

Januvia (sitagliptin phosphate)
Januvia diabetes drug developed by Merck. It was approved for use in
the United Stated October 19th, 2006.

Januvia is indicated to be used alone or in combination with metformin, Actos and Avandia.

Januvia is available as tablets containing 25mg, 50mg or 100mg. The
recommended dose of Januvia is 100mg per day to be taken with or
without meals. Patients with kidney disease or weakened kidneys should
take a smaller dose. [ Click here for the official Januvia prescribing information ]

Januvia is known as a DPP-4 inhibitor. DDP-4 inhibitors are part of a
broader class of medicines known as incretin mimetics, such as
Byetta (exenatide). However, unlike Byetta (which must be injected
twice per day) Januvia is a pill. [source]

DPP-4 inhibitors work in the pancreas to increase insulin protection.
They also work in the liver to regulate the over-production of glucose. Supposedly, Januvia is not expected to cause weight gain such as is
seen in other diabetes pills such as Actos, Avandia, and sulfonylureas
such as glimepiride and glipizide. In trials, Januvia was be taken once
per day in doses of 100mg or 200mg. [source]

Januvia is similar in action to another experimental DPP-4 pill, Galvus
which will be marketed by Novartis. [source]

Commonly Prescribed Oral Diabetic Medications

There is a special blood test that your doctor does to determine if your diabetes is in control. This test measures a chemical in your blood called ” A1C”. The higher your sugar is, the higher your A1C will be.

The American Diabetic Association recommends that diabetics must maintain a A1C of less than 7.0% in order to reduce the complications associated with diabetes. (The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists recommend 6.5% or less).

The higher your A1C, the more likely it is that you will suffer complications of diabetes such as kidney disease, blindness or amputation.

Every point decrease in A1C reduces your risk of diabetic complications and/or dying from a diabetes induced stroke or heart attack.

Please take your HBA1C level seriously – your life is in your hands.

The best way to control diabetes is with diet and exercise. If this doesn’t work, there are many drugs available.

Diabetics must not smoke — diabetics who smoke are at very high risk of having a heart attack or stroke.

Actos (pioglitizone, Takeda) – once a day insulin sensitizer
Actos is a drug that increases your body’s sensitivity to insulin. Another way to look at it is that when you take Actos, your body’s insulin becomes stronger & more effective.

Actos can take up to six weeks to kick in to maximum effect.

Actos is available in 3 doses – 15mg, 30mg and 45mg. Most people take the 30mg or the 45 mg. Actos is very expensive. If you do not have drug insurance, you can expect to pay from $3.00 to $5.00 per pill. Many internet pharmacies sell Actos. This competition drives down the prices. You can get a good price on Actos if you comparison shop.

Amaryl (glimepiride, Aventis)-once-a-day sulfonylurea
The way Amaryl works on the pancreas increase insulin production in response to a meal so that your body can use glucose more efficiently.

Amaryl is usually taken once per day. The tablets are very easy to split in case you have to adjust your dose. Amaryl is relatively inexpensive. You must never take Amaryl on an empty stomach – Amaryl should be taken with your first main meal of the day. Amaryl works fast – usually within 24 hours.

Avandia (rosiglitazone; Smithkline Beacham) – once a day or twice
a day insulin sensitizer. Avandia is a drug that increases your body’s
sensitivity to insulin. Another way to look at it is that when you take
Avandia, your body’s insulin becomes stronger & more effective.

Avandia is available in 3 doses – 2mg, 4mg and 8mg. Most people take
the 8mg per day. They either take a 4mg tablet twice per day or an 8mg
tablet once per day. Avandia is very expensive. If you do not have
Drug insurance, you can expect to pay from $2.50 to $5.00 per day depending on the dose. Many internet pharmacies sell Avandia. This competition drives down the prices. You can get a good price on Avandia if you comparison shop.

Avandamet (rosiglitazone maleate and metformin hydrochloride;
GlaxoSmithKline)

Avandamet is taken twice a day with meals. It starts to work within
one or two weeks but it can take 2-3 months before the full effects
kick in. Avandamet contains metformin so it is normally not taken
by people who have sick kidneys.

Avandamet is available in four tablet strengths of rosiglitazone/metformin,
respectively: 2 mg/500 mg, 4 mg/500 mg, 2mg/1000mg, and 4mg/1000mg

Male and female chromosomes do communicate with each other!!!

September 12th, 2009

Scientists in the University of Leicester’s Department of Genetics have for the first time revealed that the male and female do truly
communicate, at least at the fundamental genetic level.

The research counters scientific theory that the X and Y chromosomes – that define the sexes – do not communicate at all.

In the study, Dr. Zoe Rosser and colleagues have shown that exchange of DNA does actually occur between the X and Y in the regions previously thought to be completely isolated.

“Recently it was shown that the Y chromosome can talk to itself – swapping bits of DNA from one region to another, and potentially giving it a way to fix mutations that might affect male fertility. In this new research we’ve now shown that it actually maintains a genetic conversation with the X chromosome, potentially giving it a way to fix other kinds of mutations, too. So, maybe it’s not quite the dysfunctional loner we have always imagined it to be,” said Professor Mark Jobling, who led the study.

It is the Y chromosome in men that determines maleness by triggering development of testes rather than ovaries in the early embryo.

“These days the X and Y are a very odd couple, but long ago, before mammals evolved, they were an ordinary pair of identical chromosomes, exchanging DNA in a companionable way through the process of genetic recombination. However, once the Y chromosome took on the job of determining maleness, they stopped talking to each other. The X remained much the same, but the Y set out on a path of degeneration that saw it lose many of its genes and shrink to about one third the size of the X. Some scientists have predicted that it will eventually vanish altogether,” said Jobling.

“These new findings from the Department of Genetics of the University of Leicester now challenge this interpretation of the Y chromosome’s fate,” he added.

The researchers discovered that the conversation between the X and Y chromosome goes both ways, and it is also clear that mutations arising on a decaying Y chromosome can perhaps be passed to the X – the Y chromosome’s revenge.

In future, the researchers will assess how widespread X-Y exchanges have been during evolution, and what the likely functional effects might be.

The study has been published in the American Journal of Human Genetics.

YSR MISSING!!!

September 1st, 2009

Andhra Pradesh was plunged into a crisis after Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who completed just 110 days in office in his second term, went missing along with two key aides and pilots in a helicopter somewhere in the vicinity of the dense Nallamala forest on Wednesday morning.

A sombre and uncertain mood prevailed among leaders across the political spectrum as search operations launched on an unprecedented scale by land and air through the day failed to yield any results as the missing Bell-430 helicopter could not be located since it lost contact with air traffic control authorities at 9.35 a.m.

The Chief Minister was on his way from Begumpet airport in Hyderabad to Anuppalle village in Chittoor district to take part in a mass contact programme with rural folk. The journey, that was expected to last two hours and 20 minutes, was feared to have ended soon after the chopper was sighted by villagers between Atmakur and Bandi Atmakur in Kurnool district, mid-way from Hyderabad to Chittoor.

H1N1…

August 20th, 2009

Influenza A(H1N1) virus is a subtype of influenzavirus A and the most common cause of influenza (flu) in humans. Some strains of H1N1 are endemic in humans and cause a small fraction of all influenza-like illness and a large fraction of all seasonal influenza. H1N1 strains caused roughly half of all human flu infections in 2006.[1] Other strains of H1N1 are endemic in pigs (swine influenza) and in birds (avian influenza).

In June 2009, World Health Organization declared that flu due to a new strain of swine-origin H1N1 was responsible for the 2009 flu pandemic. This strain is commonly called “swine flu” by the public media.

Jackson harmed himself before death…

August 2nd, 2009

In a bid to obtain powerful prescription drugs, Michael Jackson banged his head and hurt himself before his death in June, media reports say.

The pop music icon, who died June 25 after a cardiac arrest, was said to have been so desperate to fuel his addiction that he harmed himself to convince doctors to give him medication that included the strong pain killer Demerol, reports contactmusic.com.

‘LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department) detectives have interviewed some 30-35 witnesses so far, and it has come to light that Jackson was prone to self-harming. He’d bang his head against the wall, hit his fists and arms against furniture, anything to cause a cut or a bruise.

‘He wanted to convince his doctors that he’d had an accident and was in a lot of pain — a legitimate reason to ask for painkillers. This came up as part of the investigation into Michael’s drug-taking. So far there’s no evidence to prove or disprove the claims,’ a source told Britain’s Daily Mirror.

A family source told the newspaper that the late singer was an attention seeker and used to harm himself for that reason.

‘Michael self-harmed as an attention-seeking mechanism or to gain sympathy. He enjoyed being cared for. It was a huge cry for help,’ said the family member.
